I agree that Lu is melodramatic but did that first person really call his new song “shamey, mansplaining”? Christ.
Yes I did, super cultured white dude rapper. Is your issue with the language I used (not intellectial enough for you) or that, as a black woman, I dared speak against a song that attacks black women?
Well, to be fair, I’m not a rapper, but anyways. The issue was not that your language was “too intellectual” or that you dared to speak against the song. it’s that I think calling the song “shame” and “mansplaining” is a little drastic. For the record, I don’t care for the song and I think Lupe is the epitome of a pseudo-intellectual so don’t confuse this response for a delusional fan defending a can-do-no-wrong celebrity. But to the subject at hand…
I don’t think the song “attacks” Black women. I think it advises Black women to stop referring to themselves as bitches, bad bitches, or any other form of the word. Attacking Black women would be more along the lines of what Hopsin did in his new song calling women tramps and hoes for going out to the club on weekends. Lupe’s song, however, is saying that use of the term (even in a positive light) by women enables the negative use to remain prevalent in a society that’s already oppressing women, especially Black women. If you disagree with that train of thought, hey, you disagree. A lot of people do. But to label that as “shamey” seems like a stretch because it doesn’t seem to me like he’s shaming women, it seems to me like he’s recommending that women stop glorifying a disgusting term. “Mansplaining” also seems a bit unfair because there have been many women who have expressed disdain towards the “Bad Bitch” movement (movement is the wrong word, but I can’t think of a better synonym at the moment) that has skyrocketed in pop culture. Have these women been making records about the subject? yes. Have those records gained national attention with that message? No, so sexism can be attributed to that, but I don’t think the purpose of the song is a BIG STRONG INTELLIGENT MAN TELLING BLACK WOMEN TO SAY THIS BUT NOT SAY THAT BECAUSE IF A MAN SAYS IT, IT MUST BE RIGHT FOR HER BECAUSE MAN KNOWS BEST.
Pop culture LOVES to keep the oppressed down. It reinforces negative stereotypes, creates new ones, and it will go out of its way to make women (especially Black women) appear like sluts, bitches, or any other variety of rude terms. When corporate rap stars start heavily using the phrase “bad bitch” to describe an ideal women, and women start taking pride in it, a lot of men look at it as a victory because women are embracing a label that doesn’t seem to be all that respectful. Lupe was attributing the term “bad bitch” being used by women in the music industry to minstrel shows of the early 1900s back to modern times with the negative image of Black men in a lot of corporate rap. Rich White men are paying Black people millions to glorify many things, not just the term “bad bitch,” such as materialism, misogyny, Black-on-Black violence, drugs, and many other things. These records sell, the highest purchasing demographic (pre-teens and teens) imitate it (not just the language, but the style with skinny jeans, snapbacks, and gold hair streaks becoming popular seemingly overnight), and pop culture and advertising’s affect has been felt.
Could the song have been aimed more at the labels? Sure. But the video tackled that to a rather large extent with the minstrel show parallel. The lyrics in the song put some responsibility on the listeners, and I don’t think that’s “Shamey” or “mansplaining.”
